The following year Social Sciences Faculty was reorganized and in the autumn of 1922 one more faculty - Pedagogical Faculty with Literature and Linguistics Department was opened. Such prominent scholars as academician I.I. Zamotin, professors A.N. Voznesensky, M.N. Piatukhovich were among its staff. Yakub Kolas, one of the most outstanding Belarusian writers, began to lecture on the Belarusian language and Methods of its teaching since the autumn of 1923.

During the period of 1921 - 1931, 336 graduates received the diplomas of philologists. About 50 of them became prominent writers. (P. Brovka, P. Golovach, P. Glebka, A. Zvonak, Y. Skrygan, etc.). During the 1930s some talented students and members of the teaching staff of BSU were subjected to repression.

On June 7, 1931 some faculties and departments were transformed into independent educational establishments be the Decree of the Union of People Commissars “On Reorganization of Belarusian State University”. Literature and Linguistics, Social Sciences and History departments were the basis for the Higher Pedagogical Institute. The Philological Faculty as the autonomous establishment began its work at Belarusian State University in 1939.

Russian and Belarusian Departments of the Faculty have always been the leading ones. Since 1947 the Department of Journalism had been a part of the Philological Faculty until it became a separate one in 1967. Since the middle 90-s the Faculty has been developing rapidly. Some new specializations were added: Slavic, Classical, Romance and Germanic, Eastern philology.

Among the outstanding graduates of our Faculty are prominent Belarusian writers Ivan Melezh, Nil Gilevich, Ivan Naumenko, Rygor Baradulin, academicians Podluzhny, Zhuravsky, corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences Bulyka, Loyko and others. Some of them were the members of the teaching staff of the Faculty.

THE PHILOLOGIST DIPLOMA IS IN GREAT DEMAND!

At present, when various forms of international cooperation are successfully developing, a proficient linguistic and cultural qualification gives the graduates of the Philological Faculty of BSU the opportunity to work as assessors, marketing managers, interpreters in advertising and travel agencies, various companies in different fields of national economy. After introducing new directions our specialists are in great demand in publishing houses, editorial offices of newspapers and magazines, radio and television channels. All-round training and high educational background allow them to feel confident as programme authors, editors, announcers and hosts of the most popular shows. Nowadays philologists work successfully in the IT centers, in research centers dealing with speech and text computer processing. Legal proceedings of copyright cases, cases of human dignity defense are impossible without different expert examinations of texts, utterances and even separate words which make it necessary to use philologist's knowledge in the judicial system.

Our graduates' deep knowledge in the sphere of World Art and Literature, their humanities background is invaluable in literary museums, archives and library departments of rare books and manuscripts, and undoubtedly in the system of education.
